Japan is experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of coronavirus in its tourism industry, with more than a quarter of hotels reporting they have already seen cases.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Health, the number of coronovirus cases has reached nearly 40,000.
This means more than 3,500 cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, including at least 5,000 cases from the Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu.
The ministry said there were 1,967 cases in hotels and 6,906 in other areas.
In addition, a total of 2,039 cases have now been reported from the United States and Canada, and there were 4,811 cases in Taiwan.
More than one in 10 hotel guests are from abroad.
According to the ministry, nearly two-thirds of the cases are from the US and Canada.
The US alone has reported over 3,000 confirmed cases, including 2,200 deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
